General Information
Background:
Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) is the most important plasma protein produced by the yolk sac and liver during embryonic development. Its plasma levels drop rapidly after birth, but begin to decline by 3 months before birth. It usually reaches normal adult levels after 8-12 months. The AFP content of pregnant women was measured by maternal blood or amniotic fluid for screening abnormal development.
