Hapten

Hapten.jpgHapten, also known as incomplete antigen, refers to some small molecule substances that cannot induce immune response when present alone, that is, not immunogenic, but can be immunogenic when crosslinked to or combined with non-antigenic polylysine carriers to induce immune response. Since the hapten needs to be bound to the response effector product to induce an immune response, it is only immunoreactive and not immunogenic. Common haptens include polysaccharides, lipids, nucleic acids, and certain small molecule compounds and drugs. Complete antigen can be obtained through combination of hapten with a carrier of a pure protein.
